About

cider in tanks MollyCraigies Cider is an Irish independent cider maker based in the rolling hills of Co. Wicklow, Ireland. It is owned and run by Simon Tyrrell, Angus Craigie, Ralf Högger, Emma Tyrrell and Alan Garrioch. Each brings different skills and expertise to the business.

Simon’s main responsibility is on the fermentation side of things and he creates the blends for the ciders each vintage. While at Craigies we maintain the character of the ciders form year to year, our ciders are a vintage product so and like wine will vary slightly depending on the harvest and that year’s weather conditions. Simon has spent twenty years in the wine business, the last ten of which were spent establishing his own importing business, gaining recognition as Ireland’s leading specialist in wines from the Rhône Valley. In 2009 he went one step further and in order to cross the line from importer to producer he undertook a two year wine production diploma at Plumpton College at the University of Brighton in the UK, emerging with a Distinction. Returning home and with an obvious lack of vines in Ireland he joined forces with Angus in 2011 to start Craigies Cider.

Angus has a diploma in Agricultural Engineering as well as a degree in mechanical engineering. Angus, in addition to being a farmer, has had a varied career turning his considerable skills to iron work, forestry and event promotion. Angus looks after the processing and logistical side of Craigies Cider as well as assisting Simon with the fermentations.

Ralf, like Simon, comes from a wine background and first worked in his father’s wine business in Switzerland. He has been working in the wine industry in Ireland for over 10 years. Ralf also is the face of Tenuta il Palagio, the Italian winery belonging to Sting and Trudie Styler, where he has established the brand worldwide as well as setting up the estate’s cookery school and hospitality section.

Ralf puts his considerable wine tasting skills to good use helping Simon and Angus with Craigies’ cider blends each year.

Alan took early retirement from his role as Sales Director at Tennant & Ruttle and uses his extensive experience to lead the team at Craigies in the right direction.

Emma set up Tyrrell & Co. with her husband Simon. She established Cider Ireland, the organisation of craft cider makers in the island of Ireland, and has been running Rhône Wine Week in Ireland since 2014.

Craigies only use Irish apples, sourced from dedicated growers in counties Waterford, Tipperary, Cork and Kilkenny. The team at Craigies believe that Irish cider achieves its greatest complexity and expression as a blend and that each apple should reflect its regional origins as well as its specific fruit characteristics. Craigies also strongly believe that their ciders should reflect the year in which the fruit was grown and so only produce vintage ciders. Over the years Craigie have developed close links with the apple growers and select from individually chosen orchards
